“The epidemiology of rhabdomyosarcoma: attempting to identify the different susceptibility factors”

Philip Lupo BCMWhile several investigators are interested in characterizing the genetic makeup of rhabdomyosarcoma tumors and in improving treatment outcomes among children diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, less work has been done in terms of understanding susceptibility to this important malignancy. The goal of epidemiology is not to simply describe the distribution of diseases, but also to identify susceptibility factors for disease, which will ultimately aid in prevention efforts. The purpose of this webinar is to briefly review epidemiologic methods for evaluating susceptibility factors, outline what is currently known in terms of the epidemiology of rhabdomyosarcoma, and discuss future directions in epidemiologic studies of rhabdomyosarcoma.

Dr. Philip Lupo is a molecular epidemiologist and an Assistant Professor in the Section of Hematology-Oncology of the Department of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine. He is also a member of the epiCenter of the Texas Children’s Cancer Center. He is currently collaborating with other researchers and clinicians in the Children’s Oncology Group (COG) to build a research program in the epidemiology of rhabdomyosarcoma. Dr. Lupo is also an active collaborator with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-funded National Birth Defects Prevention Study (NBDPS) and is part of a multidisciplinary team of experts assessing the intersection of childhood cancer and birth defects. The ultimate goal of Dr. Lupo’s research is to discover factors that can be used in childhood cancer prevention efforts and targeted interventions to limit the adverse consequences of childhood cancer treatment.
